Hello again. This year, I joined thousands of other film fans who have taken on the challenge to watch 52 films directed by women in 2016.  It’s part of a campaign using the hashtag #52filmsbywomen.  I’m throwing in an additional twist and making them all Canadian films.

My selection for week 2 is the film The Whistleblower (2005) by director Larysa Kondracki.

“The directorial debut of the Canadian filmmaker Larysa Kondracki, this grueling expose of human trafficking in postwar Bosnia teeters in an uneasy balance between quasi-documentary and fiction.  It is based on the true story of Kathryn Bolkovac, a police officer from Lincoln, Neb., who accepted an offer to join the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Bosnia. While there, she uncovered direct evidence that underage girls were being held captive and bought and sold in a profitable sex trafficking operation. When she presented her evidence to her superiors, it was ignored. When she persisted, she was fired. More »
