OIFE-1-JumpStart2015The SAWVideo JumpStart 2015 Screening was a presentation of new short narrative and documentary works by local emerging video artists who participated in the JumpStart Mentorship Grant program. The screening took place at Club SAW on May 14, 2015. This year’s screening featured works by Rebecca Garcia, Guillaume Leduc, Paola Della Malva, Morgana McKenzie, Cory & Gary Thibert and Caroline Yung mentored by Dan Gainsford, Lesley Marshall, Jacques M√©nard, Peter O’Rouke, Jith Paul and Ariel Smith. Also featured in the video recap is SAW Video’s director Penny McCann.

First established in the 1980s, the JumpStart Mentorship Program is SAW Video‚Äôs longest standing grant program. It was expanded in 2009 into a revamped mentorship program aimed at connecting artists new to video with SAW Video‚Äôs community of independent video makers. ¬†More information available on SAW Video’s website.

OttawaIndieFilm-RhianaChinapen2Filmmaker Rhiana Chinapen’s interest in social justice issues drew her to documentaries and her work planning¬†Ottawa’s One World Film Festival which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. ¬†She recently completed her first film, an exploration of¬†Capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art which she practices)¬†with the assistance of SAW Video Media Arts Centre’s Jumpstart Program.
