This year, I joined thousands of other film fans who have taken on the challenge to watch 52 films directed by women in 2016.  It’s part of a campaign using the hashtag #52filmsbywomen.  I’m throwing in an additional twist and making them all Canadian films.

My selection for week 4 is the film Double Happiness (1994) by director Mina Shum.  Thanks, Emily Ramsay for recommending it as a response to the vLog post for week 3!

The film stars Sandra Oh and Callum Keith Rennie.

“Jade Li, a vivacious Chinese Canadian, wants to become an actress without upsetting her extremely traditional parents. It’s a balancing act that Jade is finding difficult to achieve. Talking in English, wearing western clothes and going out with non-Asian guys, Jade leads a secret life when she leaves her stuffy but warm domestic scene each day. Things come to a head when Mark, a white Canadian graduate student, insists on turning their casual fling into something more meaningful. It’s a relationship that Jade’s parents would hate. What should she do?

Sandra Oh won the Best Actress Genie for her performance. The film also won prizes in Vancouver, Berlin and Turin, Italy.

Vancouver-based Mina Shum’s feature film credits include Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity and Drive, She Said. Double Happiness was nominated for five Genies and won two.” — Reel Canada

Here’s a scene from the film.

Double Happiness is available for rent on iTunes Canada.  Use the CONTACT US page or the comments on Facebook/YouTube to recommend other Canadian films directed by women that should be on the list.  Also include a link to where they are available on SVOD or VOD so we can check them out.

If you would like to follow along as I add to the list, subscribe to Ottawa Indie Fest’s YouTube channel.

Cheers, Jith.
